Lilly and the Pirates: A Swashbuckling Storybook Adventure

Lilly and the Pirates is a charming show filled with adventure and books. Based on the book by Phillis Root, the performance has all the heart and wonder you could wish for in an hour and a half.

Lilly and the Pirates’ storyline has everything from ships and storms to small towns and libraries. Lilly’s parents are exploring scientists who never slow down. Lilly is a ten-year-old worrywart who hates the sea. But what happens after Lilly’s parents get lost at sea? Will Lilly and her friends be able to save them?

Maurissa Cunningham did a wonderful job playing Lilly. She portrayed the anxiety and awkwardness the role calls for, while also being able to sing with the power the role requires.

“Lilly was my favorite because she’s a really good singer,” said my seven-year-old cousin when asked who her favorite character was.

The costuming for this show was stunning. From the pirates swashbuckling gear and Lilly’s unique outfit, the elements were executed perfectly. Costume designer Sidney Martin did a wonderful job adding his own part to this fantastical show. All the costumes were wonderful, but I would like to specifically mention Ms. Teagarden’s seaworthy attire. It makes her seem whimsical, using draped scarves and cleverly placed parrots, while remaining in the pirate's more useful fashion.

One of my favorite things about the Coterie’s style is the props and set. This set was easily manipulated and transitioned, all while staying within the realms of a quaint piratesque library with the charming stacks of books that made up most of the structure. Scenic designer Kelli Harrod put every detail into this background. For example, the titles painted onto the spines of the books and the town sign cleverly added into the set. There is no question that this was another well-thought-out job from the creative team.

It is no surprise that the Coterie chorus did wonderfully. Chorus members, Janice Cook, Shawn Murphy, Morgan Sterrett and Alec Bridges added their own flair to the show in many fun ways. For example, when all the chorus came out and started singing as Lilly prepares to rescue her parents with Ms. Teagarden.

This show says it is for all ages and means it. I saw people of all ages enjoying this show, including myself as a thirteen-year-old. It has enough humor and comedy that anyone who can appreciate a good joke or ridiculous song will laugh along. The plotline, while not being too scary, is dramatic enough to keep you invested. I used my Teen Tix KC pass and I was able to bring my seven-year-old cousin. We both loved Lilly’s tale despite our age difference. I hope this serves as another reminder that you can really bring anyone in your life, of any age, along with you with your TeenTix KC pass.
